How to Properly and Safely Burn Resin Incense

Resin incense offers a unique experience that goes far beyond the more common stick and cone incense.  Resin has been used for thousands of years in many rituals and religious traditions for purification and attracting positive spiritual energy.

Resin incense is the most potent type, offering up the truest, richest fragrances that fill a room quickly.   Resin can lead to potential hazards if not used properly.  In order to ensure your safety and get the most from it, you’ll want to take the following steps.

What You’ll Need

A Vessel for burning:  A flame resistant vessel made of stone, brass or even certain abalone shells.  You may want to get a container with legs, or place your container on a heat resistant pad or trivet of some sort to prevent table surface damage.

Charcoal tablets:  It’s important to note that charcoal used for burning resin incense is not the same as the kind you use for barbecues.  The special charcoal tablets are cleaner burning and don’t release toxic fumes.

Sand: Place your charcoal tablet in sand to help resin burn more evenly; this also protects your container from heat.  Your sand layer should be at least an inch thick.

Ritual Candle: This is easier than using matches which may burn out before you get your resin incense lit.  Ritual Candles can also enhance your rituals while giving you better control over the flame.

Long Tweezers or Tongs:  Use these to hold your charcoal over the candle flame and place the hot coal into your vessel on the sand.

Burning Resin Incense Safely

Take care to burn resin incense in a well-ventilated area, away from potentially combustible items.  It’s possible that sparks may come up if you blow on charcoal or fan it, so keep this in mind when selecting a location.

Light your candle, place your charcoal tablet in your tweezers or tongs and hold it in the flame until it starts to glow.  After the coal is ignited, place it gently into the center of your sand bed.  Fan the tablet and wait for it to glow.  Allow any crackling to stop before adding your resin.

Once the charcoal is ready, use your tweezers to drop your incense onto the tablet.

After you are finished, it’s important to ensure the charcoal is fully extinguished.  Remove it from your vessel with your tweezers and submerge it in water before disposing of it.
